Norton's Internet Security
Note: We do not support or endorse Norton Internet Security. However, it is a frequent source of problems for students using WebCT.
If you are having problems taking quizzes or reading discussion and e-mail messages, you probably have a popup blocker installed. One of the more common popup blockers now is including in Norton's Internet Secuirty suite.
There are many versions of Norton Internet Security available, so there may be minor differences between the version you have and the screenshots on this page.
Disable the popup blocker: the easy way
The easiest way to disable popups is to use the Web Assistant toolbar built in to Internet Explorer. You can choose to uncheck Block ads on this site and Block popups on this site.
If you don't see the Web Assistant menu, you'll may need to enable the toolbar. Here's how:
Internet Explorer 6
- Click on the View Menu
- Click on Toolbars
- Check on Norton Internet Security or Web Assistant
Internet Explorer 7
- Click on the Tools Button
- Click on Toolbars
- Check on Norton Internet Security or Web Assistant
Then follow the above steps for enabling popups.
Disable Norton's Internet Security
One of the easiest ways to identify if you have Norton's Internet Security suite is to locate the icon in the system tray. This is also how you can disable it temporarily. You may need to disable it temporarily to discover if it is a source of your problem.
To disable it:
- Right click on the icon
- Choose Disable from the menu
Norton Anti-Spam
You may also need to disable Norton's Anti-Spam tool, which blocks popups as well.
